College Names Sports Stadium After Prison-Profiteer GEO Group

Florida Atlantic University

Florida Atlantic University, located in Boca Raton, finalized a deal Tuesday that will rename its football building "GEO Group Stadium."  According to the New York Times, the GEO Group is a private prison corporation and a partnership of this type (between a university and a private prison corporation) is unprecedented.  The GEO Group secured the naming rights for $6 million paid out over the next 12 years, making it the largest donation in FAU's athletic history.  However, as discussed in the New York Times, the collaboration is not without controversy. "This is a company whose record is marred by human rights abuses, by lawsuits, by unnecessary deaths of people in their custody and a whole series of incidents that really draw into question their ability to successfully manage a prison facility.”  For FAU's reaction, the NCAA's stance, and further details about the potential impact of the partnership read the full New York Times Article.
