The battle aimed at taking corporate interests out of the national immigration debate is just beginning. This was the announcement made by coalition of organizations defending immigrant and community rights, moments after the U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) agency had announceed the cancelation of a for profit detention center in South Florida.

"This center was always a mistaken an unnecessary project any way you saw it. South Floridians didn't want to see more families being separated by detentions and deportations; they didn't want a huge jail in their back yards" said María Rodríguez, executive director for Florida Immigrant Coalition, an organization the participated in the Florida campaign.

The prison, which was being built in Southwest Ranches, had been commissioned to the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), considered the largest private prison operator in the nation. It would've housed 1,500 bed spaces in a 500,000 square foot area. Florida Immigrant Coalition also announced that this year has been crucial and decisive in the fight against the privatization of immigrant detentions, after plans for facilities in Valdosta, Georgia and Crete, Illinois were also abandoned. Both were CCA projects.

"This is the result of how a community, and the power of people came together against the obscure interests of profit,“  said Axel Caballero, founder and director of Cuéntame, organization that over the last few months created and distributed a documentary featuring the actions of Broward citizens and exposing the for-profit motive of prison operators.

Although, they celebrate ICE's decision, they warn that this is just the beginning. Cuéntame, is also oppossing the construction of more private facilities in at least five other states: Nueva Jersey, Georgia, California, Texas and Arizona. They will also keep an eye to the developments in Florida.

Caballero said that it is very difficult to talk about immigration reform when there is a for-profit system taking advantage of it and making money off of it. "We cannot have a nationwide dialogue about immigration because there are powerful economic and corporate interests fueling the detention of migrants," he added.

He mentioned that a year ago, before the documentary - this in fact was an obscure topic that was barely talked or known - today there are victories in Florida, Illinois and Gerorgia, "and we are going for more," he added.

Steven Owen, spokesperson for CCA, replied that "one of their values is to satisfy circumstances of change."

I’m very surprised to hear you say this about Debbie Wasserman Schultz..I’ve come to admire and respect her and of all the politicians in Florida, she and Allen Grayson have got to be two of the most honest.

It’s not just immigrants Folks! The Private Prison Industry is behind the “War on Drugs” too. Cui bono? Not just murdering, torturing drug cartels. You can add “Drug Money Laundering Banks” and “Big Pharma” as well as Privatized Prisons. How horrible that this is happening in our country RIGHT NOW! Warehousing and abusing human beings for profit! THIS IS A SYMPTOM OF FASCISM. IT IS HERE!

“Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power.” ~ Benito Mussolini

In 1944 FDR’s VP, Henry Wallace, defined American Fascism.
    See http://newdeal.feri.org/wallace/haw23.htm

It has taken them 7 decades, but with their expertise of Propaganda, Psychological War and the capture of our Fourth Estate, the Fascists have come to power and are gaining strength. How insidious has it become? They even have Debbie Wasserman Schultz under their control!!!

Private prisons? This is the biggest sign that this country is about money, not justice.

About time..we need a win here. There seems to be a conflict of interest to have private prisons in the U.S. It’s in their best interest to fill up these prisons with as many people as possible, never mind whether they deserve it or not. We have MOSTLY non violent people in our prisons and more than than China and Russia put together. What does that say about us?
The sex offender laws have been a boon for this….Most on the registry are NOT dangerous, though the laws have been changed to make them appear to be so…i.e. what used to be called statutory rape and was a misdemeanor is now a felony… this was consensual sex, perhaps with a teenage prostitute or just a Romeo/Juliet case (one 19, one 15)…there’s tons of these kind of cases on the registry. But unscrupulous politicians, overly zealous prosecutors and dram-driven media, esp. FOX love these laws and the registry. It enables their goals. Excellent news! It would be nice to see this conversation spread to commercialized detention in general. There is a fundamental flaw when profit is generated off of bad behavior. This perpetuates a system that does not help people recover from typically tragic circumstances because helping people find alternatives to detainable behavior is tantamount to less profit. If we ever want our criminal system to have a positive impact on society it will only come when we have the honest opportunity to reform it for the better of society, not some corporations pockets.
