  • The Dirty Business Of Turning This Latino Farmworker Town Into A Toxic Wasteland

**Update via  The Center on Race, Poverty & the Environment

Last Friday we submitted over 4,900 signatures and comments to the Department of Toxic Substances Control letting them know we aren't ok with Kettleman City being our state's dumping ground! Thank you to everyone who signed and the folks at Cuéntame for speaking up for what is right. We will keep you posted on the future of the dump's permit to expand by a whopping 50% (it is already the largest hazardous waste dump this side of the Mississippi River!)

Kettleman City is a rural, majority Latino and farmworker community halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It is home to the largest hazardous waste dump this side of the Mississippi and to shockingly high rates of childhood cancer, birth defects and miscarriages - two facts residents believe to be connected. There’s still plenty of room in America for immigrants. They are not a problem. Huge military budgets are a problem. Programs that don’t work (“Star Wars,” the war on drugs) are a problem. Not having a single-payer healthcare system is a problem. America COULD be prosperous and debt free, with a good education system and healthcare for all. We could repair our roads and bridges, and take good care of the elderly. Immigrants can contribute to all of these things. But we won’t be able to afford them unless we get rid of those REAL problems.

    Immigrants? – No problem!

    Side With Justice Over Racism!

The United States Supreme Court is hearing arguments in Arizona v. United States, the Obama administration’s challenge to Arizona’s anti-immigration law, SB1070. What they won't be hearing is what and who has fueled this discriminatory legislation.

Will justice triumph over racial profiling and discrimination fueled by supremacist and nativist fringe groups? We need to stand together in this most pressing time.

We need to show that together we reject this hate agenda.

Sign the pledge stating that YOU side with justice over racism!

  • signed Debbie: Say No To CCA! 2012-04-10 16:46:45 -0700
We don’t need to create another rich lobby whose interests are inhumane. (We’ve got enough of a monster in the military-industrial complex!) Immigrants add to America’s economy. They work hard for low wages and the U.S. didn’t have to spend money to raise and educate them – they arrived as adults. It’s no coincidence that 8 years after the federal immigration law cut immigration down to a trickle, we had the worst depression in America’s history.

For-profit prisons skimp on medical care, food, and other basic necessities. Then taxpayers have to pick up the slack when prisoners are released.

America already imprisons a higher % of its population than ANY OTHER COUNTRY. This is sad; it’s also VERY EXPENSIVE! But CCA and other corporations are making a bundle. And they want MORE OF MY MONEY AND YOURS. They will never stop. We should get rid of them all. Government prisons were not great, but at least they didn’t have powerful incentives to incarcerate everybody in sight. We are selling our souls to the devil!

    Debbie: Say No To CCA!

Why is FL Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz siding with the Corrections Corporation of America and not her constituents in Southwest Ranches? 98% of her constituents DO NOT want a new for-profit immigrant detention center!

    IMMIGRANTS ARE NOT FOR SALE

We call on Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-20) to WITHDRAW her current endorsements for CCA’s project.

The Obama Administration announced a change in the priorities for detentions and deportations, to focus on real national security concerns, not on separating parents from their children or deporting DREAMers who are only seeking a better future.

It is time for ICE to stop the immigrant money making machine and tell CCA to GO AWAY from Southwest Ranches.

THIS PETITION IS NOW CLOSED - WE REACHED OUR GOAL!!! But feel free to leave your comment!
