Don't let this absurdity drive immigration reform!

Don’t let anti-immigrant rhetoric drive the immigration debate. Nativist, racist and fear-mongering hate groups are working hard to drive their narrative on immigration. For years now, anti-immigrant groups have successfully infused their message into the national immigration debate. Influencing local politicians and national figures - with the same talking points: "More punishment", "Militarize the border", "Massive deportations", "More Enforcement." This has resulted in dangerous policies that have led to flagrant violation of human rights.

It is time we put basic immigrant, human rights back in the forefront of our national values and priorities! Let Congress and the President know that to reform immigration they must prioritize "Immigrant rights before enforcement."Add your name and message - make sure your voice is heard!

I used to vehemently believe that illegal immigration was wrong and that it represented a pernicious usurpation of what America means to provide for its citizens. I’m currently studying abroad in Uppsala, Sweden, but I’m from Tucson, Arizona, where I also study at the University of Arizona. Living in another country and feeling as welcome here as I do has affected my opinion of immigrants and America’s attitude toward them yet further. Ignoring for a moment the fact that only 1.7% of the American population is Native American (i.e. people whose ancestors didn’t immigrate to America) and the fact that people born in the US today had no more say in where they were born than people born in Mexico today, I think Americans need to ask themselves what kind of nation they want to live in and be represented by. Are we a nation of gluttonous, covetous, fearful, vitriolic whiners? Or are we a nation that opens its arms to anyone who wishes to feel its embrace? I favor the latter and believe it to be America’s most fundamental and righteous philosophy.

    Very sincerely,

    Lou

Like all immigrants living in the U.S. before us we deserve a chance too! We are no different. Latinos simply want a chance to give their families a better life, filled with safety, education and greater opportunities, which I believe is a core American trait.

But… we ARE a nation of immigrants. Very few people living here are “native” in the long run.

This is America we are diverse. Our culture is unique and should be accepting we are made of many races and ethnic groups. Most white “Americans” like myself ancestors came from Europe not AMERICA. The “illegal immigrants” are actually the native people to this land people are so ignorant and not willing to accept change.
