SIGN PETITION: Tell Governor Brown, "Support domestic workers, sign the California Domestic Workers Bill of Rights!"

Throughout California, domestic workers and allies will be celebrating Mother's Day by honoring moms and recognizing the role of domestic workers in the American household.

California's approximately 200,000 domestic workers do the work that makes other work possible and ensure a thriving economy. They perform the fundamental duties of the home, including childcare, house cleaning and cooking, as well as caring for people with disabilities, the sick and the elderly. The vast majority of California's domestic workers are women, minorities, and immigrants.

Domestic workers deserve the same respect as all other workers.

I have done domestic work in my life despite being a college graduate. It is not a living wage and there are no benefits. The desperate will do domestic work no matter how it depresses us that we can not earn more by people who can certainly afford to pay us more too. I feel many of the situations are exploiting the domestic workers, because it is not a living wage and there are no benefits. It is not easy work either. Someone has to do it and so poor people wind up doing this work that no one else wants to do.

They should be paid a living wage and benefits. That is the right thing to do.

Many being women, domestic workers were deliberately excluded from the right to form unions and lacked protection under the law. It’s time for domestic workers to be recognized, to earn fair wages and have decent working conditions.
