The Dirty Business Of Turning This Latino Farmworker Town Into A Toxic Wasteland
**Update via The Center on Race, Poverty & the Environment
Last Friday we submitted over 4,900 signatures and comments to the Department of Toxic Substances Control letting them know we aren't ok with Kettleman City being our state's dumping ground! Thank you to everyone who signed and the folks at Cuéntame for speaking up for what is right. We will keep you posted on the future of the dump's permit to expand by a whopping 50% (it is already the largest hazardous waste dump this side of the Mississippi River!)
Kettleman City is a rural, majority Latino and farmworker community halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It is home to the largest hazardous waste dump this side of the Mississippi and to shockingly high rates of childhood cancer, birth defects and miscarriages - two facts residents believe to be connected. Eleanor Hayes signed If You Don't Speak Up, They Will Speak For You... 2013-02-22 13:28:31 -0800These people don’t speak for me. How disgusting and anti American can you get. If your a full blooded American Indian, we are all immigrants. I am ashamed and embarrassed by these people. I am 60 years old and was born and raised in low income housing in New York City. I grew up with lots of different kinds of kids. It made me the kind of person I am today. Our daughters were raised on navy bases all there lives, and accept and had all kinds of different friends. I have an idea, they want some perfect white race, go live on an island somewhere and practice there closed minded, racist, disgusting life. We don’t need them her.
