  • The Dirty Business Of Turning This Latino Farmworker Town Into A Toxic Wasteland

**Update via  The Center on Race, Poverty & the Environment

Last Friday we submitted over 4,900 signatures and comments to the Department of Toxic Substances Control letting them know we aren't ok with Kettleman City being our state's dumping ground! Thank you to everyone who signed and the folks at Cuéntame for speaking up for what is right. We will keep you posted on the future of the dump's permit to expand by a whopping 50% (it is already the largest hazardous waste dump this side of the Mississippi River!)

Kettleman City is a rural, majority Latino and farmworker community halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It is home to the largest hazardous waste dump this side of the Mississippi and to shockingly high rates of childhood cancer, birth defects and miscarriages - two facts residents believe to be connected. WATCH THE FOLLOWING VIDEO EXPOSÉ.

To properly address our country’s broken immigration system, we must first begin with acknowledging that this is a MAN MADE problem. We played a large role in causing this migration pattern through NAFTA, our role on the war on drugs, and allowing our weapons to be transferred to Mexico and in the hands of criminals. We have a moral responsibility to make this right. So I urge congress, and President Obama, to do the right thing. Doing the right thing does not mean allocating more resources to border security and enforcement. Doing the right thing means allocating enough resources to USCIS and the immigration court system so that we can properly process 11 million undocumeted individuals. Immigrants deserve to have their right to due process respected. Immigrants should have access to an immigration attorney, whether they have the funds to secure one or not. And if an immigrant poses a real threat to our society, then he or she should be processed out of the country in a fair and humane manner. Immigration is about PEOPLE, not bargaining chips. Still today the conversation is more about enforcement, and the economic benefit to our country and little about how we are going to work towards fully integrating these individuals. I call on congress to change the tone and rhetoric of this conversation to one that is more reflective of our American values of fairness and equality. And I call on congress to get REAL Comprehensive Immigration Reform DONE!

I support CCA GO AWAY! It is unethical, it is IMMORAL, and we should be ashamed to allow such a thing like this to take place in our country!

    Debbie: Say No To CCA!

Why is FL Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz siding with the Corrections Corporation of America and not her constituents in Southwest Ranches? 98% of her constituents DO NOT want a new for-profit immigrant detention center!

    IMMIGRANTS ARE NOT FOR SALE

We call on Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-20) to WITHDRAW her current endorsements for CCA’s project.

The Obama Administration announced a change in the priorities for detentions and deportations, to focus on real national security concerns, not on separating parents from their children or deporting DREAMers who are only seeking a better future.

It is time for ICE to stop the immigrant money making machine and tell CCA to GO AWAY from Southwest Ranches.

THIS PETITION IS NOW CLOSED - WE REACHED OUR GOAL!!! But feel free to leave your comment!
