Organizers fell short Thursday in gathering the required number of valid signatures to recall Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

The grass-roots group Respect Arizona needed to submit 335,317 valid signatures by 5 p.m.

Lilia Alvarez, the group’s campaign organizer, said that more than 300,000 signatures were collected but that the group will not submit the petitions for a count “out of respect to voters and taxpayers.”

“It is definitely a sad day because nobody wins,” Alvarez said inside the county recorder and election offices.

give him another year (to hang himself by) and then try again. His policies are so fascist that the voting population must be trying to get rid of him. For decades, Sheriff Arpaio has been an international embarrasment and a dangerous example of how a sheriff should not act.
