The Pricetag on the Tip of an Iceberg? In Brazil it's 20 cents

It's not just about the 20 cents hike on bus fare. If a few days ago the media was trying to portray a sensationalist protest over a minor hike, the people in Brazil today proved that it was just the tip of the Iceberg. More than 100 thousand people took to the streets in many different cities acros Brazil to protest against the corruption entrenched in politics and its politicians. For instance, while there´s an alarming lack of schools and hospitals in virtually every city, there are billions of dollars over budget being spent on soccer stadiums - designed and built exclusively for the World Cup.

Today on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and across the media around the globe people are highlighting the protests in Brazil. President Dilma Rousseff was booed by over 65 thousand people during her speech at the Confederation Cup opening match (Brazil vs Japan.) It will be a tense next couple of days for Dilma as the last time protests of this magnitude broke off in Brazil was in 1992 and things did not end up too well to Fernando Color de Mello then president and subsequently impeached by its people.

A very notable point of this whole situation is that people instead of watching the confederation cup matches, they are turning off their TV sets (and computers) and going to the streets to protest.  For a long long time people have been under the spell of soccer in Brazil. There's even a popular saying that goes like: "Soccer is the opium of the mass".

The fact that  Brazil is protesting during soccer time means Brazilians are ready to change and are no longer accepting the the image sold of an enchanted country where everybody plays soccer, everyday is a carnival and women are objectified. As information spreads, people are ready to stand up for their rights and shine a light on the corruption entrenched in Brazil for so long.

The people have had enough.

Basta Brasil!
