Debbie: Say No To CCA!

Why is FL Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz siding with the Corrections Corporation of America and not her constituents in Southwest Ranches? 98% of her constituents DO NOT want a new for-profit immigrant detention center!

IMMIGRANTS ARE NOT FOR SALE

We call on Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-20) to WITHDRAW her current endorsements for CCA’s project.

The Obama Administration announced a change in the priorities for detentions and deportations, to focus on real national security concerns, not on separating parents from their children or deporting DREAMers who are only seeking a better future.

It is time for ICE to stop the immigrant money making machine and tell CCA to GO AWAY from Southwest Ranches.

THIS PETITION IS NOW CLOSED - WE REACHED OUR GOAL!!! But feel free to leave your comment!

In the mid 90s, we had a misguided friend go to prison on a drug charge. That’s how we learned just how big a racket the prison business is. They gouge inmates for everything from toothpaste to room and board. How many Americans know that inmates are charged room and board on top of what tax payers are gouged?

When he went to jail, our friend had outstanding student loans. The interest on those loans compounded while he was unable to work. By the time he got out, the penalties and interest were 5 times the original loan amount.

Our friend did his time, paid his debt to society and was released years ago — with a financial debt he’ll never be able to pay off in his lifetime. I’m sure this is the case for most ex-cons.

Corporations who run prisons for profit need to be investigated, and not be given MORE captive customers.

Private prisons are an invitation for abuse. You can bet they will influence legislation to assure they remain full. Why are we going down this road?

I don’t agree with you on this one Debbie. I think the private prisons are only a profit organization at $200.00 per day per immigrant. They don’t care about guilt or innocence. Please do not endorse them.

If a new immigrant detention center is needed, it should be staffed by federal employees, who are dedicated, reliable and accountable. Privatizing results far too often in abuse of the detainees and also excessive cost. I am surprised by the Congresswoman’s position, and I urge her to change it.

For-profit prisons drain our state budgets and damage our entire judicial system.

private prisons are one of the worst ideas ever to come along; to make a profit off the misery of people is simple unconscionable. Furthermore, they are not cost effective – they cost taxpayers more than government run prisons and are worse for both the inmates and the corrections officers – all because of greed
